Last year saw more than 60 great entries into the competition.

“We had so many entries last year of such a high standard, it was difficult to pick the winners.  I look forward to seeing what the competition brings this year,” added Sarah.

Give it a home that isn't a landfill site

‘CHOOSE to reuse’ is the message from North Lincolnshire Homes as the second multi-agency action week begins in the Westcliff area next week.

16 skips will be placed in various locations throughout the area with North Lincolnshire Homes staff also on hand to help residents tidy up where they live.

Other work in the area will also see the NLH Caretaking Team creating concrete wheelie bin bays, trimming hedges and providing new clothes line posts.

Residents are being urged to think twice before throwing furniture away after the social landlords Choose to Reuse Store has helped prevent more than 10 tonnes of furniture ending up in landfill – and aid some of the most vulnerable residents in turning a house into a home.

Jackie Buchanan, Estate Coordinator for North Lincolnshire Homes and project managing the action week, said: “This action week is all about encouraging long term life changes for residents.

“The skips will clear the rubbish that is here today, but it is about changing people’s attitudes - waste being just one of them - that will make the real difference.

“The multi-agency approach we have adopted offers people the chance to take advantage of a wide range of information and advice, and we always welcome anyone to talk to us with any problems or questions they might have.”

The action week is part of a series of multi-agency events which also includes Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, North Lincolnshire Council and the Probation Service amongst others.

During the week NLH partner agencies will be busy offering home and personal safety advice, removing bulky waste items and clearing rubbish; with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service providing a crashed car demonstration at the marquee event on Friday.

Pete Baron, from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We support this initiative as it helps to address the problem of rubbish building up in the community, therefore reducing the risk of arson attacks in the area.

During the week members of the community are invited to speak with Community Safety staff to gain expert road safety advice along with the opportunity to book a free home fire safety visit.”

Pete Woodcock, a volunteer for the Probation Service, said: “The action week is just a starting point of a bigger picture for the estate.

Through partnership working we are aiming to instil a sense of pride and encourage people to be proud of where people live.  If we can achieve this, hopefully we will be able to reduce anti-social behaviour and improve the standard of living for all those in the area.”

You’re being watched: new £10,000 set of cameras to combat crime
SEVENTY-FIVE covert CCTV cameras are to be installed in the region’s neighbourhoods as a housing association bids to clamp down on crime and anti social behaviour.

The £10,000 North Lincolnshire Homes-funded project will see cameras mounted at dozens of strategic sites over the past few weeks.

Jackie Buchanan, Neighbourhood Coordinator at NLH said: “We have begun to put signs up highlighting that we are introducing CCTV in areas and the cameras are set to be installed within the next month.

“The main aim is for the community to feel safe about where they live. Anti social behaviour (ASB) is in issue in some places and this is a way of giving tenants peace of mind.

“We will prosecute anyone we see causing nuisance behaviour.”

The scheme will see the use of high tech equipment, with cameras placed in a variety of strategic and covert points, from light fittings to doors. They will be moved around on a regular basis and particularly target potential ‘crime hotspots’.

Claire Coyle, ASB Manager at NLH, said: “The focus of the cameras will be on deterring crime as well as bringing criminals to justice. They will be a new tool for us to capture evidence which can be used in the courts.

“The locations for the cameras cannot be unveiled but they will be placed primarily in areas where there are vulnerable or elderly tenants.”

The purchase of the cameras is fully supported by Humberside Police.

Neighbourhood Insp. Graham Ward said: “This news will be greatly received. Many members of our community who have been upset by the long term deterioration of the old equipment and in some cases the withdrawal due to them being unserviceable.

“However, like all things they wear out. This will be an opportunity to have better updated cameras and it’s well known the confidence they give to local people.

“They are not of course the total answer but properly placed they both reduce offending and assist in the prosecution of some cases.”

The news comes just weeks after it was unveiled that North Lincolnshire Homes and Humberside Police had joined forces to set up ASB patrols in Westcliff, with the introduction of two ASB and crime- fighting officers in the neighbourhood.
